To love oneself is the beginning of a lifelong romance

“To love oneself is the beginning of a lifelong romance.” These beautiful words remind us that the relationship we have with ourselves is the longest and most important relationship we will ever experience. We spend years seeking love, acceptance, appreciation and validation from others, often forgetting that we also need to give those things to ourselves. Self-love is not selfishness or arrogance. It is the quiet understanding that we deserve kindness, patience and respect, even on the days when we feel imperfect or lost.

Loving oneself begins with accepting who we are, including the parts we often try to hide. Nobody is perfect, and everyone carries insecurities, regrets, fears and memories of moments they wish they could change. Instead of constantly judging ourselves for these imperfections, we can learn to see them as part of our journey. Acceptance does not mean refusing to grow; it means understanding that growth becomes easier when it comes from compassion rather than self-hatred. We can acknowledge our mistakes without allowing them to define our entire identity.

There comes a time in life when we realise that constantly seeking approval from others can become exhausting. We may change ourselves to fit into someone else's expectations, remain silent to avoid disappointing people, or measure our worth through their opinions. But true self-love begins when we stop making our happiness dependent on external validation. It means learning to trust our own decisions, listening to our inner voice and understanding that not everyone needs to understand or approve of our choices for them to be meaningful.

Self-love also means learning to enjoy our own company. There is something deeply peaceful about being comfortable with oneself. Being alone does not necessarily mean being lonely. It can become an opportunity to reflect, discover our interests, understand our emotions and reconnect with the person we are beneath all our responsibilities and social expectations. When we become comfortable in our own presence, relationships with others can also become healthier because we no longer expect another person to complete us.

Another important part of loving oneself is forgiving oneself. We often forgive other people for their mistakes while holding our own mistakes against us for years. We replay old conversations, regret decisions and wonder how different life could have been if we had acted differently. But the person we were yesterday did not have the knowledge, experience or perspective that we have today. Instead of punishing ourselves for the past, we can learn from it and move forward. Sometimes, self-forgiveness is the first step toward genuine peace.

Self-love also teaches us to establish boundaries. Saying no when something hurts us, walking away from situations that repeatedly diminish our worth and choosing peace over unnecessary conflict are all forms of self-respect. We do not have to remain available to everyone at the cost of our own emotional well-being. Loving ourselves means recognising that our time, energy and peace are valuable. It means understanding that protecting ourselves is not cruelty and choosing ourselves does not make us selfish.

As we grow older, our understanding of love changes. We begin to realise that love is not always about grand gestures or another person promising to stay forever. Sometimes, love is waking up and choosing to keep going when life feels difficult. It is taking care of ourselves, pursuing our dreams, resting when we are tired and refusing to give up on the person we want to become. It is speaking to ourselves with the same kindness we would offer someone we deeply care about. In that sense, self-love becomes a lifelong romance—one that evolves as we evolve.

Ultimately, loving oneself is not a destination that we reach once and never have to revisit. It is a continuous journey of acceptance, growth, forgiveness and discovery. There will be days when we feel confident and days when we question everything about ourselves. What matters is that we continue returning to ourselves with patience and compassion. When we learn to appreciate our own presence, recognise our own worth and find peace within ourselves, we stop searching desperately for someone else to give us what we can begin giving ourselves. And perhaps that is the most beautiful romance of all—the lifelong journey of becoming, understanding and falling in love with who we truly are.
